Climate Resiliency & Adaptation
Ready to weather the future
Climate change is having a profound impact on people and property. The world has already begun to experience the consequences of severe droughts, rising sea levels and climbing temperatures with more extreme weather conditions in the forecast.
With climate resiliency and urban adaptation solutions, cities can take a proactive stance in protecting critical infrastructure, preserving ecosystems, protecting coastlines, mitigating the impact of changing weather conditions, and better managing critical resources to advance net-zero ambitions.
Securing water resilience
As climate change impacts precipitation patterns, securing water security and climate resilience are essential for long-term sustainability. We have extensive experience in holistic water management solutions, spanning coastal engineering solutions, stormwater management, nature-based solutions, and integrated planning and design.
Coastal Protection
As part CPG’s coastal protection studies, we have investigated and explored the integration of Green Infrastructure, embraced nature-based solutions such as the restoration of mangroves, beach nourishment, established green buffer zones, and studied how elevated structures, like buildings perched on stilts or raised platforms could be a strategic measure to reduce vulnerability to storm surges and flooding.
Our approach focuses on integrated, multifunctional measures that complement land use visions, such as the creation of new recreational spaces to enhance the liveability of the communities.
In 2021, we were awarded Singapore’s first large-scale site-specific study for the City-East Coast. The project, critical to the country’s long-term sustainability, involves the examination of 58km of coastline and 213 km² of inland area to recommend flood mitigation improvements. Our study includes Singapore’s Long Island plan, which involves reclaiming 800 hectares of land to create a new reservoir to combat rising sea levels.
Our work will translate into a detailed design for the new reservoir, from its size, function and barrages and pump stations needed, to its community aspects and parks.
Flood Prevention
Nature-Based Solutions
We incorporate nature-based elements to specifically address the water management issues that unique sites face.
This includes the ABC (Active, Beautiful, Clean) Waters concept, which is a strategic initiative by Singapore designed to improve the quality of water and life by harnessing the full potential of waterbodies. It involves integrating drains, canals and reservoirs with the surrounding environment in a holistic way to create beautiful and clean streams, rivers, and lakes with community spaces for all to enjoy. At CPG, we have successfully integrated ABC water design features into 18 sites, covering 40% of all ABC sites in Singapore.
Other nature-based solutions include mangrove restoration, beach nourishment, the establishment of green buffer zones, and other measure that can address climate concerns while delivering social and economic benefits.
Featured Projects
City-East Coast Study
CPG was appointed by Singapore’s National Water Agency PUB to undertake the first site-specific City-East Coast Study. This includes examining 58km of coastline and an inland area of 213 km² and recommending flood mitigation improvements.
Lakeside Garden
To address waterlogging caused by high groundwater level at Singapore’s Lakeside Garden, CPG introduced design features like vegetated swales and gravel swales for drainage improvements. We replaced the 12,000m concrete drain with a new 8,500m concrete drain and 4,750m of swales and streams.
