Designing a Future-Ready Airport Gateway: CPG’s Expertise Takes Flight in Da Nang
Airports are critical infrastructure that supports tourism, trade and economic development, while shaping many international visitors’ first impressions of a city or country. Effective airport design must therefore align passenger experience, operational efficiency and engineering performance with the flexibility to accommodate future change.
The Reconfiguration and Expansion of Da Nang International Airport Terminal 2 reflects this integrated approach. Building on its involvement in the design of the existing international terminal, CPG Consultants returns as Lead Design Consultant, providing architectural, civil and structural, MEP and specialist airport systems design expertise. This continuity allows CPG to guide the terminal’s next stage of development with a strong understanding of its original design, existing infrastructure and operational requirements.
An Architectural Identity Inspired by Da Nang
Beyond meeting the operational demands of a modern international airport, airport architecture also has the opportunity to express a strong sense of a place.
The roof form of the Terminal 2 expansion abstracts the movement of seagulls along Da Nang’s coastline into a flowing architectural gesture. Evoking flight, openness and the city’s coastal identity, it gives the terminal a recognisable visual character while responding to the functional and environmental requirements of a modern international airport. The design is driven by the vision of creating a modern, efficient and future-ready international gateway.
Rather than applying symbolism as a separate decorative element, the design integrates architectural expression with structural and operational considerations. Together, these considerations shape a terminal designed not only to reflect Da Nang’s identity, but also to support the city’s continued growth as an international destination.
Supporting the Growth of Central Vietnam through Better Airport Design
Da Nang International Airport is a vital gateway to Central Vietnam and an important enabler of the region’s economic development. As Da Nang grows as a tourism destination, international business centre and emerging financial hub, the airport must be equipped to support its expanding regional and international connections.
Scheduled for completion in Q2 2027, the expansion will strengthen Da Nang International Airport’s capacity to support Central Vietnam’s continued economic growth, tourism development and regional connectivity.
Designing for Performance and Passenger Experience
For Da Nang Terminal 2, CPG Consultants’ design approach is guided by three principal considerations: operational efficiency, constructability and user wellbeing.
CPG’s design strategy considers how the terminal can evolve as an integrated whole rather than treating the expansion as a standalone addition. This involves aligning new spaces and systems with existing infrastructure, planning around ongoing airport operations and ensuring that each intervention contributes to the terminal’s overall performance.
The terminal’s planning seeks to create clear and efficient passenger flows across departure, arrival and transfer processes. The arrangement of passenger-processing facilities, boarding gates, commercial areas and supporting infrastructure is coordinated to reduce potential bottlenecks and enable airport operations to function effectively as demand increases.
Drawing on its multidisciplinary aviation expertise, CPG is coordinating the architectural and engineering requirements with baggage-handling, security and other specialist airport systems. This holistic approach enables the team to address operational needs, constructability and architectural identity within a cohesive design framework.
It will also integrate modern airport technologies and upgrade supporting operational infrastructure, creating a more efficient and seamless passenger experience while equipping the terminal for future growth.
Building on CPG’s Continuing Aviation Legacy
The Da Nang International Airport Terminal 2 expansion forms part of CPG Consultants’ growing portfolio of aviation projects in Vietnam. Alongside Da Nang, CPG is also the design consultant for the expansion of Phú Quốc International Airport, and served as the Principal Design Consultant for Tan Son Nhat International Airport Terminal 3, a major gateway for Ho Chi Minh City. Together, these projects reflect CPG’s continued commitment to designing airport infrastructure that strengthens connectivity, enhances passenger experience and supports Vietnam’s long-term aviation growth.
